Workington Town boss Phil Veivers says the club’s destiny is in the hands of the players now.

The regular season is drawing to a close before the Super Eights kick into gear and Town are still rock-bottom of the Championship table.

But Veivers warned they will not be written off yet as the players are desperate to avoid the drop.

“Our destiny is in our own hands. I look at the previous seasons and I have to say this group likes a challenge,” said Veivers.

“In my first year we won nine out of our 12 last matches to stay in the competition.

“And in my second year we did it again winning nine out of 11 to remain in this division.

“So the fate of where we are playing next year is in the players’ hands now.”

Veivers is working against the clock to try and bring in a new recruit for their trip to Featherstone on Sunday.

He was hoping to try and bring in a loan player and was ringing around the Super League club’s ahead of today’s noon deadline.

Town’s squad has been hit by more injuries, with doubts over Perry Whiteley and Jarrod Sammut, who picked up knocks at the weekend.

And Declan Hulme suffered a dead leg so he will also face a late fitness test to check if he is okay to play.

He said: “I only had 18 players last week and at this stage I have 17 with a couple of doubts which will make us up to 19.”
