Workington Town could feel upbeat despite their pre-season defeat at the hands of Huddersfield Giants.

Town were winning the clash at the John Smiths Stadium until the final six minutes when their hosts edged in front to close out the game 16-14.

Workington again fielded several trialists from the amateur game while new signing Stuart Howarth was on the bench.

Town opened the scoring with a try from Stevie Scholey, converted by Carl Forber but the young Huddersfield side bounced back quickly with a converted score of their own and the two sides were level at half time.

Into the second half and the pattern was repeated as Town went back ahead through a Tee Ritson try but the conversion was missed.

Then the Giants replied with an unconverted try of their own for 10-10.

Brett Phillips crashed over for Town's third try but again the extras were not added and the visitors held a slender four-point lead.

And it was to come back to haunt them as Huddersfield scored in the dying minutes and added the conversion to sneak the win at 16-14.
