Director of rugby Les Ashe hopes the extended break before Workington Town's next game will do them the world of good.

Town have two weeks to prepare for the visit of University of Gloucestershire All Golds due to cup ties this weekend and Ashe believes it is the perfect opportunity to take stock.

He said: "It can work both ways.

"We would have loved to be in the next round of the cup but the break give us a bit more time on the training ground.

"That said, we've had a really good pre-season but you can only build your momentum by playing and winning your league fixtures.

"While losing to Newcastle in the cup wasn't an ideal result for us, it was maybe a bit of a reality check.

"Obviously, everybody involved with the club was delighted that we've got our first two points."

Town's 20-6 win over Oxford on Sunday got them up and running in the league, and Ashe said he was happy with a performance which was not brilliant but was good enough.

"We had a good weekend, good preparation," he said.

"I think overall, the first half was a bit nip and tuck and there was a lot of enthusiasm from what is a very young and big Oxford side who matched us.

"The second half was a remarkable change from our boys.

"Some of our constructed tries were maybe foiled by some good defence.

"There were some pretty good performances, I think Perry Singleton came off the bench and had a big, positive impact in the game.

"Tom Curwen went well in the front row and I thought Stuart Howarth handled the ball tremendously well as a link."
