Workington Town are hoping to inspire their latest crop of players with wise words from two former legends of the club this weekend.

Former Great Britain stars Les and Peter Gorley will talk to the Town squad and help hand out the 2017 playing jerseys as the club holds a launch event tomorrow at Derwent Park.

The two stars, who originate from Great Broughton, were cornerstones of the Workington pack in the 70s.

Town chairman Garry Mounsey said: “We are hoping that they will inspire the next generation.

“These are two legends of Workington Town who were proud to wear the shirt and we hope they can inspire our new team as we go into a new season.”

The launch day begins at 3pm in the Gus Risman bar and fans are encouraged to come along and get a good look at the squad before the League One opener on Sunday against Newcastle at Derwent Park.

Garry Mounsey will open proceedings and coach Dave Clark will also talk about the upcoming season.

There will be individual shirt presentations to the players by their sponsors and the Gorley brothers before a question and answer session with Clark.

Les Gorley played 224 games for Town, including three Lancashire Cup finals - helping them to win the trophy in 1977, beating Wigan in the final.

He went on to play for Widnes, ironically helping them to beat Town in the 1979 Lancashire Cup final.

Les was part of the Widnes side who also enjoyed Challenge Cup triumph in 1981 and 1984.

Peter played alongside his brother in the second row in Town's Lancashire Cup triumph in 1977.

He went on to sign for St Helens and eventually captained the famous club.

Along the way, he enjoyed both Premiership and more Lancashire Cup success.
