Workington Reds joint-manager Dave Hewson is hoping to dispel the stigma of the club being slow starters with a second win in four days when they face Frickley Athletic tonight.

Reds began the Evo-Stik Premier League season in style with victory at Rushall Olympic on Saturday – their first opening day win in eight attempts.

And now Hewson is hoping to carry that form into their first home game at Borough Park, kick-off 7.45pm.

“In the past we have not got off to a good start,” admitted Hewson.

“That doesn’t mean we have not performed well over the season but we have that stigma of Workington get off to a slow start so to get that first win under our belts was great.

“Now we have to carry that on. We can’t sit back and wait for wins to come. We have got to use the momentum and kick on from that.

“It was a great start and I am looking forward to two home games and hopefully carrying the momentum on.”

Attacking midfielder Joe McGee came off the bench for the final couple of minutes at Rushall and Hewson is hoping to give him more game time tonight as he continues his comeback from injury.

And Sam Smith could also come back into the fray, although he is unlikely to start.

Hewson added: “Joe was on the bench at Rushall but we didn’t want to use him if we didn’t have to.

“But we hope he will get some more game time tonight and we are also looking to get Sam Smith back in the squad. It will be good to have him amongst it again.”

David Symington was switched into a left-back role for the opener and Hewson admitted the former Carlisle United player could feature there again. There are still several defensive players on the injury list and Symington played a key role at the weekend.

Hewson added: “We know his qualities and where we want him to play, ideally in a more advanced role but he is happy to do this for the team.

“He knew he had to sit in there and do a job for us because we were light in that area.

“He is experienced and is happy to do it again if he is called upon, he is just happy to be back playing.”

Reds drew their league game at Frickley last year and then Athletic picked up a win at Borough Park late in the season.

So Hewson knows this will not be an easy game. He said: “Frickley will be pretty similar to the side we played last season.

“They have brought a forward up front who is pretty dangerous but other than that we will prepare for the same as last year.

“It will be another physical encounter and a tough game but we know their qualities and strengths and we will prepare for that.”
