Workington Reds boss Dave Hewson blamed a lack of cutting edge as his side's good run of form came to an end against Stafford Rangers on Saturday.

Reds went down 2-1 at Borough Park against a physical Stafford outfit and they slipped back to 13th in the Evo Stik Premier League as a result.

Hewson admitted his side had plenty of opportunities but they could not capitalise on them and it cost them the game.

"In general play, I thought we kept the ball well and passed it well but in the final third we lacked a cutting edge," said Hewson.

"We just didn't seem to make the right decisions at the right times.

"We got into good positions and had great opportunities but we couldn't capitalise on them which was frustrating and disappointing."

Hewson also admitted Reds made it tough for themselves, letting in two early goals.

He added: "It was disappointing to concede two goals, which were sloppy goals on our part.

"If you concede two, then it is always an uphill battle but we got ourselves back in the game.

"But we just couldn't find that cutting edge to get a second goal.

"I felt if we had got that, then we might have pushed on but, the longer the game went on, the more it looked like we weren't going to score unfortunately."

Hewson said the club was still looking for additional players, especially up front, but said it was difficult to get them to travel.

"We have had three failed attempts at three strikers," he said.

"I have been a player when managers have said it's so difficult to attract players out to Workington and that's proved to be the case this time unfortunately.

"We are so far away from certain areas and it would take too much of our budget to travel.

"It is unfortunate but we stay positive and we will continue to look but, at this moment, it is not quite happening."

Reds are back in action tomorrow night against Aspatria in the Cumberland Cup at Borough Park.

Hewson said he would use the game as an opportunity to give some game time to some of the Reserves, who have been on the bench in recent weeks.
