Workington Reds will be without new signing Tom Kilifin and midfielder Rob Wilson when they travel to face Penrith tonight in their pre-season friendly.

Striker Kilifin, who signed from Lancaster City, picked up a dead leg in the 6-0 win over Gretna on Friday night.

And Wilson took a knock to an old ankle injury in the same encounter, a problem that is giving some concern to Reds bosses.

Team manager Derek Townsley said: “Tom has a dead leg so should recover but Rob took a knock to an old injury where he broke his ankle while out in Australia.

“It has given us some cause for concern but we will just have to wait and see and hopefully it will settle down but this match will be too soon for him.”

Reds have recorded some good victories in their friendly encounters so far, with the only loss coming against Carlisle United.

But Townsley says the crucial thing is to get game time under the players’ belts and try to get through unscathed.

He added: “This will get us another step closer to that first league game. Everything is now geared up for August 13 and hopefully with each game they get that bit fitter.

“But the most important thing is we get people through unscathed.”

Penrith boss Matt Henney is hoping to have a few more players back for this clash, although Martyn Coleman will miss out as he is on his honeymoon.

They lost out 2-0 to Holker Old Boys at the weekend but with 11 players missing Henney was not too devastated with the result.

“I was a little bit disappointed but then I looked at the amount of players we had missing,” he said.

“I hope I will have a few more back for this game and I am looking for a hard test.”

Penrith have brought in goalkeeper Jonny Jamieson from Reds, as well as striker Coleman who has returned from South Shields.

They have also signed Mike Newton, the ex-Morecambe player who has been playing in Texas.

“We have been building up nicely,” said Henney. “This will be our hardest pre-season game up to now but it is a good benchmark for us to see where we are.”
