Workington Reds midfielder Joe McGee made a welcome return to action in Saturday's friendly with West Auckland Town.

McGee came on off the bench in the second half of the 1-1 draw at Borough Park.

He was delighted to be back on the field after coming off during Reds' play-off final at Salford back in April with a knee injury.

McGee said after the game he was pleased to be back in action after a three month lay-off.

"It was good to be back. I had a scan and it was a slight tear in the ligament in the knee," said McGee.

"Hopefully I will get a bit more game time on Tuesday and see how it goes."

There was some concern in the Reds camp when James Earl came off the field with a knock to his foot.

But after the game Earl was confident that it was just a slight twist to his ankle and he hoped to be back within a week.

"It's just a twist," he said. "It's the same foot that I injured last year but hopefully I'll be back in a week."

West Auckland went ahead early in the match against the run of play when Adam Burnicle got put clear and beat the keeper.

It took until well into the second half for Reds to convert one of their many chances.

Tom Kilifin reacted quickly when the Auckland keeper fumbled the ball and he lifted his foot to pop it into the back of the net despite claims from the visitors that it was still in their keeper's hands.

Kilifin proved a danger man for Reds with impressive performances from some of the youngster including Jamie Bethwaite in defence.

Reds now move on to their next friendly with Queen of the South on Tuesday night.
