Speaking after Workington’s thoroughly deserved 1-0 victory at Clitheroe, manager David Hewson confirmed that the Barrow-based defender would be putting pen to paper this week.
“We have been impressed with him in pre-season and he has something to offer at this level," said Reds' joint-boss.
“He has quickly become popular within the group and has contributed each time he has played."
Mellen becomes the only summer addition to the squad which concluded a successful pre-season campaign with a hard-earned win in Lancashire. He was one of several players who limped away from the ground nursing knocks.
Reds had gone into the final friendly without Conor Tinnion, Dan Wordsworth and the two Sams, Joel and Smith, while, in addition to Mellen, Jack Ryan, Rob Wilson, Jake Simpson, James Earl and Nathan Waterston required treatment post-match.
Reds were worthy winners but the only goal came late in the day.
Scott Allison had squandered several chances during the game, but finished well from 12 yards, three minutes from the end to clinch their sixth win of the summer and the third by a single goal.
There were commanding performances from several of Reds’ established players but Hewson once again paid tribute to teenagers Leo Holliday and Cam Harker along with Ben MacDonald.
“They have helped us out again and enhanced their own standing within the club," Hewson said.
"We rotated the team several times during the game but were competitive throughout, controlled proceedings for long spells and it was pleasing how we played.”
