Workington Comets team manager Tony Jackson was pleased to finish the season with a win as his side saw off Glasgow 47-43 on Saturday night.

The Tigers’ massive first leg lead meant they still progressed to the League Cup Final but a strong performance from a depleted Comets team saw them at least beat the visitors with pride on the line.

Team manager Jackson said: “It was an excellent night to finish.

"Glasgow were the only team we hadn’t beaten all season, so it was nice to put that right.

“We knew a win on aggregate was never going to happen, so what we wanted to do, was to try to restore a bit of pride.”

Comets were without Kenneth Hansen due to injury and Rasmus Jensen due to illness so used rider replacement for guest Theo Pijper at No 4.

The hosts had just six race-winners to Glasgow’s nine but managed only six last places to Glasgow’s nine as avoiding the back proved to be decisive.

“Mason Campton rode well and fully deserved to go in heat 15,” Jackson said.

“The main thing was to get the two points in that race.

“Obviously, it would have been a bit different if Aaron Summers hadn’t broken down in heat 12 but it’s about time we had a bit of luck.

“Mason was still racing one of Ricky Wells’ engines and it made a big difference again and gave him a lot of confidence.

“Adam Roynon has finished the season in one piece for the first time ever.

"Matt Williamson underlined his improvement with six paid eight. Good on the whole team for the performance, I’m very happy.”

Jackson said he just hoped the meeting would not be the last ever at Workington.

He added: “Before the season people said we would finish eighth, well we finished seventh and we still feel we’ve underachieved.”
