Whitehaven player-coach Carl Forster felt his players went into the derby clash against Barrow with the wrong approach.

He had been among the action as Barrow Raiders avenged their recent defeat at the Recreation Ground with a deserved 15-2 victory.

“I thought too many of our lads went into the game with the wrong attitude, starting to think they are better than they are and just have to turn up," Forster said.

“Barrow seemed to want it more than we did and, after we did so well in the first game, it was disappointing to play like this.

“It wasn’t good enough in the first half, and the only bonus was that we were all square at half-time without conceding a point.

“Then, in the second half, we missed tackles which gave them their two tries and overall it was a performance which was poor.

“The week ahead will be all about preparing for Newcastle and learning from what we didn’t do right on the day against Barrow. We will go through the video and highlight the points we need to work on."

The win put Barrow back into second place, above Whitehaven again on points differential, with six more games to play in the Eights.

The surprise defeat for Toronto Wolfpack has given the chasers hope and will be a massive boost to York City Knights.

Barrow’s coach Paul Crarey was delighted to record the win and had plenty of praise for his players who had lost 32-6 at Whitehaven two weeks earlier.

“We studied that video and saw a few things which we have worked on. This time round, I thought we were patient and clinical, and it was a superb performance right through the squad," said coach Crarey.

“But as I have said to the players, we have won nothing yet in the league. We need to maintain this sort of form through the Eights and into the play-offs. There’s a lot of rugby still to be played."
