Whitehaven boss Carl Forster insisted his side need to be more clinical after their victory over Coventry Bears.

Whitehaven won 44-12 at the Recreation Ground to pick up their second League One victory of the season.

But after a great first-half performance, with six tries to their name, Haven sat back in the second half and allowed Coventry to come back at them.

“At the break, we were completing at 80 per cent and I just wanted that upped a little bit,” said Forster.

“But we were complacent and finished at 60 per cent. We were trying balls that you wouldn’t normally try.

“It’s nice to get them out of the way but we need to be more clinical, especially on Friday against Workington.”

Forster admitted he was happy to pick up the league points but said his side can perform better.

He added: “The two points was the main focus before the game but I think we got a bit sloppy, like in the Oxford game.

“We got a nice advantage, started playing some nice football and then complacency slipped in and it ended on a bit of a sour note really with them scoring.

“We know we can be miles better than that and I’m just waiting for that 80-minute performance.”

Forster praised the defensive shift the players put in and how much it has improved from pre-season.

“Pre-season, we averaged 39 points a game conceding and now we’re down to under 26 so the defensive attitude has changed in the group and if we can keep improving, we will be a tough team to beat,” said Forster.

The head coach said attention now rightly shifts to the Good Friday derby with Workington at Derwent Park.

“It’s going to be a light week, so the lads will recover right. We only have four-and-a-half days to the derby,” he explained.

“Everyone gets that little bit more up for the derby than other games but training will be relatively light and we need to touch up on our skills.”
