New Whitehaven coach Carl Forster is already gearing up for pre-season.

Only appointed on Friday, the youngest coach in professional rugby league at 24 has had a whirlwind five days scouting new players, talking over contracts and lining up his assistant at the Recreation Ground.

He said: “It was a bit of a surprise when the offer came and it’s been all systems go since then, but progress has been made on a number of fronts."

Forster wants everything in place before his squad returns to training in the middle of November, when he expects to have a 22/23-strong squad and three or four pre-season friendlies arranged for the New Year.

Later this week, he hopes to be able to announce the name of the man who will be his No2 when Whitehaven tackle life in the third tier next year.

He’s already been talking to some of the players who are currently on the Whitehaven register and wants them re-signed as quickly as possible.

“I know we have lost Ben Davies to Oldham, and Thomas Coyle has left the club, and it looks as though Grant Gore may be going to Swinton," he said.

“There are rumours about players moving to other clubs.

"But I have been speaking to Dave Allen and Liam Carberry and we will just have to see what happens.

“The budget I have been given is less than this year, because of relegation, but I still feel we can put together a good, competitive squad for League One."
