Whitehaven bid to round off their Championship programme tomorrow with their first double of the season.

A 26-24 win at Sheffield March hinted that Whitehaven might have enough about them to avoid any subsequent relegation fight.

But, in actual fact, both clubs have struggled to make enough of an impression.

Whitehaven have beaten neighbours Workington Town twice this term. Once was at Blackpool in the Summer Bash and the second game in Cumbria ended in defeat at the Zebra Claims Stadium on Sunday.

“Clearly it’s a big game for both clubs tomorrow and, from our point of view, it would be a major boost to close the gap to a point on one of the two teams immediately above us,” said chairman Tommy Todd.

“That win at Sheffield was the result of a very good performance and we want to produce something like that on Saturday.

“We have had six applications [for the head coach position] now and will be getting round to making up a shortlist when we have discussed them all,” he said.

James Coyle, who is standing down at the end of the season, will have injury issues to contend with ahead of the Sheffield game.

Louis Jouffret (calf) and Chris Taylor (hamstring) continue to be monitored after both failed to make the line up for the Town game.

Liam Carberry (knee) is doubtful and John Paul Brocklebank has a damaged thumb.

Meanwhile, the talk in rugby league over the last 24 hours has centred on the problems at York City Knights.

With the prospect of the Championship One side folding, the Rugby League is considering extending the transfer signing deadline to allow their players time to find new clubs.
