Workington Town boss relishing working with Widnes Vikings

Gary Charlton rates Widnes boss Denis Betts an ideal coach to work with next season – as he knows all about the workings of the Championship.

Workington Town this week announced their new partnership with the Vikings, which will involve players from the Super League squad turning out for the Cumbrians on a weekly basis.

And given Betts’ Championship experience – he took over at Widnes ahead of the 2011 season, when they were still in the second tier – Charlton is looking forward to working with the ex-Wigan and Great Britain forward.

“With Denis being in our league with Widnes, he understands everything that comes with it,” said the Town coach.

“This is part-time rugby, and I think he will be more sympathetic to our situation and help us out as much as possible.

“We are trying to build our own squad and players will be available from Widnes. We are not going to bring in any player for the sake of it, but we need to strengthen in this division.”

Charlton is not expecting to take any Widnes players for pre-season training but hopes those available for any given Sunday match are able to train with Town on a Thursday and Saturday ahead of the game.

Winger Elliott Miller is out of hospital after shoulder surgery.
