Cumbrians lead BARLA side to victory over Jamaica

West Cumbrians were well to the fore as BARLA Great Britain Cougars ended their tour of Jamaica with a 56-28 win over the hosts, to wrap up the series 2-0.

Egremont’s John Paul Brocklebank, the tour skipper, kicked eight goals from 10 attempts and added a try for a personal 20-point haul, while Cockermouth forward Johnny Goulding ended the tour with a man of the match performance in the searing heat of Kingston.

Centre Clayton Sutton also featured in the final match, with Egremont team-mate Paul Corkhill playing off the bench and Ross Gainford, of Kells, partnering Brocklebank in the halves.

Mick Turner BARLA Great Britain international manager said: “This has been a fantastic tour and credit to the Jamaican boys, they have come on leaps and bounds in the past two weeks.

"I was pleased with the lads especially in the horrendous heat, and how well they have conducted themselves both on and off the pitch. We’ve had some great interest in the games and the Jamaican boys have played well.”

Places are now up for grabs to face the Australians, whose autumn tour of the UK will include games against Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and BARLA Great Britain, at Sale on October 6, ahead of the Stobart Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.
