Workington Reds raring to go after two-week league lay-off

With a two-week break behind them, Workington Reds will be raring to go when they take on Gloucester City this afternoon.

Darren Edmondson’s men have not played since trudging off the pitch following the disastrous 6-1 Blue square North drubbing at the hands of Bradford Park Avenue.

Since then, they have also bowed out of the Cumberland Cup, albeit with a largely reserve team, going down 5-1 to Penrith.

Aside from the Bradford result, Workington have just one defeat in five Blue Square Bet North matches, and go into today’s match at Whaddon Road, unbeaten in three away games.

Reds will welcome Mark Boyd back after a month on the sidelines.

The midfield general has been missing with a calf problem, but has trained for the last two weeks, and fit to start the match.

Anthony Wright came through 90 minutes in midweek against Penrith, as it expected to play a part.

Hosts Gloucester are just four points above the relegation after their win over Boston on Wednesday night - a result boss Dave Mehew branded “the best win of the season”.

They have a patchy home record, losing as many times as they have won at Whaddon Road (three).

Mehew said: “We have got a good record against Workington, but I’ve said to the lads that there will be no point in putting in a performance like we did on Wednesday if we don't build on it.

“We need to pick up points in the next few games as we've got some tricky games coming up in the run-up to and around Christmas.”
