There was an exciting start to the day as Michael Dods picked up another win at Carlisle, defying a penalty.

John Kirkup, trained by Darlington’s Dods, was first past the finish line in a close three-horse finish.

“He loves the ground,” Dods said, speaking after his first win of another productive day at Carlisle. “He got shafted back further than he wanted. But, to switch around and finish as he did is a fair effort.”

Following a steward’s enquiry, there was a change in the final three. But backers of John Kirkup need not have worried with Weeton moving up to second and Falabelle third.

And Dods and jockey Paul Mulrennan made it two in two, winning the Totepoolliveinfo.com EBF novice stakes.

This time on Bryon’s Choice, Mulrennan finished ahead of Star of Zaam and Highbeck Racing-owned Ingenuity in more straightforward fashion before Mulrennan added a third win of the afternoon in the Cumberland Plate.

With more than £17,000 on offer for the winning team in the ebfstallions.com eternal stakes, it was Elusive Beauty who won another thrilling race.

Jockey Daniel Tudhope steered the horse to a win at the end of a four-horse charge for the line. Owner David Kelly said: “She has won money 16 times out of 18 races.

“We kind of had the race put down a few weeks ago.

“The rain came on Sunday and we saw the forecast. She is very effective and very game.”

The day, which brought a bumper crowd at Carlisle Racecourse, also saw Keith Dalgleish-trained Whatsthemessage win the EBF Stallions Breeding Winners Fillies’ Handicap Stakes.

And the day of racing concluded with 9-1 shot Showboating first past the winning post in the Carlisle Bell Consolation Race Handicap Stakes, leading in Muirsheen Durkin. That win saw the team take more than £5,000 in owners’ prize money over the seven furlongs, 173 yards 14-horse race.
