There was a double of doubles at Carlisle Racecourse’s latest meeting of the summer flat race season.

Jockeys Ben Curtis and Tony Hamilton secured two successes apiece. Curtis claimed wins on Fake News and Sea Tide, before Hamilton took a late double, winning the final two races of the evening.

Although the summer flat racing season still has a couple of meetings left this year, the summer weather looked to have disappeared yesterday at the Cumbrian track.

But there was a surprise winner in the first race of the evening that warmed up the early proceedings.

Fake News, a 25-1 shot, took the victory. The David Barron-trained horse finished ahead of Lucky Lucky Man and Havana Mariposa in the novice auction stakes to give Curtis his first win of the meeting.

Manatee Bay, ridden by Natalie Hambling, took the victory in the Kingmoor Park Properties handicap race.

In a close battle for the other places in the top three, Cliff came second, with Curtis’ Semana Santa third.

Noel Wilson, trainer for Manatee Bay, said: “She did everything right.

“I was shouting at the screen ‘wait and wait’ but she did. She loves the ground.”

The Baines Wilson LLP Nursery Handicap Stakes, over five furlongs, was won by Porchy Party as the team pocked more than £3,000 in owner’s prize-money after the success.

Curtis’ Hermana Santa finished strongly on the outside to take second spot and £1,007 after that performance.

There were only five horses entered in the fourth race of the night for the Carlisle Youth Zone Maiden Stakes.

Odds-on favourite Sea Tide took the victory in the one mile and one furlong race for maiden three and four year olds yesterday – although it was, in fact, only five three-year-olds that were involved.

Haroon came second with the top two finishing well clear of the other three horses as Sea Tide got off the mark after coming third at Wolverhampton 12 days ago.

The Carr’s Group PLC Class Six Handicap Stakes was a remarkably close race with a number of horses fighting to be first to the finish line.

Thornaby Nash won the cash as the Karen Tutty-trained horse claimed the photo finish, ahead of Pretty Jewel.

Lady In Question beat Reinforced in the penultimate race of the evening, before Sheriff of Nawton rounded off proceedings, winning the last race to give Hamilton the second double of the night.

Carlisle Racecourse’s penultimate flat race meeting of the summer season will be on Wednesday, September 13.
