Ben Curtis was the jockey to follow at Carlisle as the former champion Irish apprentice notched an 80-1 treble on Ghost Serge, Clon Coulis and Lucent Dream.

The Cumbria venue has been a happy-hunting ground for Curtis, who yielded a four-timer there in September 2015.

Ghost Serge (5-6 favourite), who got the ball rolling, was an appropriate winner of the Champagne Charlies Club Novice Auction Stakes.

Owned by the race sponsors, the Archie Watson-trained youngster put up a good performance as he was burdened with a 7lb penalty for a debut success at Lingfield.

Never far off the pace, the Zebedee colt was taken to the front inside the final furlong and ran out a length-and-a-quarter winner from Arcavallo.

Ghost Serge could go on to better things, with the Group Two Superlative Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket's July meeting an option for the grey.

Watson said: "Very few horses have defied a penalty this year. It takes some doing and I thought he did it very well.

"He'll have options in July and he'll have to step up in class now.

"We'll have a look at the Superlative and there are Listed options as well. He'll be a lovely sort over a mile next year."

Curtis completed a quick double when Clon Coulis (10-1) made a successful racecourse bow in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes.

David Barron's three-year-old filly showed a neat turn of foot in the closing stages to pull four lengths clear of the race-hardened World Power.

The treble came up on the Irish-trained Lucent Dream (3-1 favourite) in the Thursby Handicap.

The six-year-old, trained by John McConnell, took control in the final furlong to come home two and a half lengths clear of Maulesden May.

"He's a big horse and he likes room, which is why Ben took him out wide," the County Meath handler told Racing UK.

"It's nice to get a win on turf as we weren't sure if he was good on it, but he obviously is.

"There should be more improvement in him and hopefully the handicapper won't be too hard."

Curtis just missed out on a four-timer when Contentment was beaten three-quarters of a length by Miss Sheridan (11-4) in the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies' Handicap.

After having finished second in four of his five previous starts, Hee Haw (11-4 favourite) got off the mark with tidy display in the Molson Coors Handicap.

Paul Mulrennan had Keith Dalgleish's three-year-old handily placed as Exotic Guest made the running before Hee Haw swept into the lead to strike by two and a quarter lengths.

Full Of Promise (11-2), trained by Richard Fahey, asserted under Paul Hanagan at the business end to take the Racing UK Handicap by two and a half lengths from So It's War.

William Haggas and Tom Queally later teamed up with Solo Mission (even-money favourite) to win the concluding Watch Racing UK On 3 Devices Handicap by two and three-quarters of a length.
