LET it be a good year for you, full of success, satisfaction, pleasant surprises and lots of smiles of happiness.

A smile is both infectious and contagious. It always helps the day along whatever the circumstances.

Of course, there will be the frustrations and unwanted events, but I hope each one is overcome with the help, encouragement and support from close family and friends.

One has to be realistic and careful before setting oneself New Year's resolutions things that are out of control to correct can often go pear-shaped during the year.

Therefore, I make only three resolutions, focusing on areas I can control, so that I avoid as so often happens by March the original aims becoming pointless.

1) To present a happy, smiling disposition wherever possible, especially when confronted with difficult situations

2) To encourage the progress of any project, scheme and idea currently underway or receiving direct action from Wycombe District Council

3) To try hard to adapt to the new cabinet style of local government which will be introduced as a pilot scheme in May, thereby jumping out of the comfortable rut that can so easily dominate the councillors' day-to-day approach to representing the people of the district.

May the year 2001 smile on your household, your neighbours and all those you meet each day. A happy and exciting year ahead to you all.

David Cox, Chairman, Wycombe District Council
