Newly-crowned Northern League champions Leyland Cricket Club will be Penrith Cricket Club’s first opponents of their 2017 Northern League season.

That match will take place on Saturday, April 22, before they welcome Chorley to Tynefield Park a week later for their first home fixture of the season.

Penrith’s first Cumbrian derby will take place on May 20 when they host Netherfield from the Kendal area while, a week later, they will go to face Barrow.

They are currently due to finish their Northern League campaign with the reverse fixture against Leyland on September 9.

The club, who have moved swiftly to sign Sri Lankan all-rounder Bhanuka Rajapaksa as their overseas pro, held their end-of-season presentation evening and club dinner last Saturday.

Ryan Sidebottom, who was part of the PCA England Masters side that played an all-star anniversary match in July to celebrate Penrith’s 150th anniversary, was among those present.

The John Hurst Trophy went to the first-team player with the highest overall batting average, which was Chris Marrow, with an overall average of 49.17.

Marrow also picked up the Nigel Beaty Trophy for most runs scored, scoring 530 runs in the league and 60 in the cup. He edged out Michael Hay (549) and Greg Hall (498) for that award.

Paul Hindmarch took home the Fred Barclay Trophy for the best overall bowling average. He took 51 wickets at an average of 17.00.

Jonathon Osborne and Hay shared the fielding gong, the David Ash Trophy, while the Player’s Player Boral Edenhall Trophy went to Hindmarch.

Kieran Trevaskis took the majority of the second-team awards, including Player’s Player of the year.

Meanwhile, Brodie Glendinning took the John Hendry Trophy for taking 12 wickets at an overall bowling average of 11.00.

And Samuel Hall and Jamie O’Brien shared the prize for most man-of-the-match awards, beating a further five that stood on two man-of-the-match performances.

Henry Marshall took the C and W Herald Shield for best overall batting average and shared the most runs, with a total of 246 runs throughout the course of the 2016 season, with Luke Hunter.

Marshall also took home the Third XI Bowling Shield for his overall average of 12.07.

But the Dick Winter Trophy went to Nick Hodgson for best individual performance for his 153 against Temple Sowerby II, while Player’s Player was shared between Marshall and Keelan Spurrell, who claimed the Beacon Fire Protection Trophy for his fielding throughout the course of the season.

In the fourth XI, Marc-Lucas Winspear took home the Arthur Bateman Memorial Shield and the Fourth XI Batting Trophy for scoring 588 runs at an average of 73.50. He also won the Fourth XI Player of the Year Trophy.

The other two fourth XI winners were Jamie Lucas and Tobin Hart for his 5-46 at Kirkby Stephen II.

Owen Jones won the Harold Millican Trophy as Penrith’s most improved player of the year.

And the Colin Mevlin Trophy, for club person of the year, went to Kriss McLean.

An evening with former England Rugby League player Adrian Morley has been arranged for November 26.
