Heavy overnight rain, coming on the back of a wet week, put paid to the Eden Valley Cricket League Premier Division programme.

Somewhat surprisingly, a few games survived with the middle Eden clubs; Nunwick, Staffield and Edenhall, together with the games at Irthing Vale and Kirkby Stephen in Division Three, going ahead.

Nunwick (70) entertained Lanercost (76/2), losing heavily by eight wickets. Paul Crabtree (4/13) doing most of the damage before skipper Ross Wilson (43) led his team to victory.

Staffield, crucially, beat Wigton by 60 runs to maintain their challenge to Lanercost.

Batting first, Staffield (142/4) with Tony Threlkeld (49 not out) and the evergreen Terence O’Neill also with 49 not out. Wigton (82/10) struggled to cope, with Mark Vasey (5/21) and Richard Bamber (3/34); Matthew Reed (36 not out) best with the bat for Wigton.

The game at Wetheral lasted just 15 overs with Langholm (39/2) when the game was abandoned.

In Division Two, Edenhall (115/8) defeated Caldbeck 2nds (95/10) by 20 runs.

Edenhall relied on Matthew Wilson (43) and Johnnie Kidd (33) for the bulk of their runs; Callum Donald (3/25) and Craig Pattinson (3/13) best with the ball. In reply, Caldbeck 2nds (95/10) started well but collapsed late on, losing their last six wickets for 16 runs; Rob Bland (5/21) doing the damage.

Division Three saw two games; Irthing Vale (129/5) with Duncan Miller (55 not out) had a winning draw, with Temple Sowerby (114/9) falling just short of a second point; Andrew Hunter (4/22) and Nadeem Pervaz (3/29) best of the bowlers.

Kirkby Stephen 2nds lost to Keswick 3rds.

Keswick 3rds (154/2) batted first with Finn Turnbull (51 not out), Paul Ireland (40) and Matthew North (42) also in the runs. Kirkby Stephen 3rds (144/10) made a spirited reply with openers Will Morland (29) and Ross Jackson (28) starting well.

A big collapse followed until Duncan Rose (40) nearly took Kirkby to victory; veteran Keith Richardson (4/11) and Finn Turnbull (4/15) completing a fine all-round match, saw Keswick home.

On Sunday, Appleby 2nds (113/9) lost by five wickets to Carlisle 3rds (114/5); Josh Bellas (56) and Josh Brabbins (20) the only batsmen to threaten; Luke Westmorland (3/16) and Paul Halliday (3/10).

Carlisle 3rds did not find it easy with Josh Bellas (10-2-17-1) having a fine all-round performance; Cameron Westmorland (45), with an aggressive knock, and a late flourish from Jacob McAllindon (21 not out) taking the visitors to a victory which tightens up the Division One promotion battle.

Wigton 3rds (207/10) with Lewis Little (88) and Liam Mulholland (4/29) beat Stainton 2nds (92/10); three run-outs not helping Stainton. Dan Wilson (3/9) best with the ball.

Patterdale (59/10) were routed by Nunwick (60/3) losing by seven wickets at the Nunwick Oval.
