Carlisle left it to the last over of a gripping match to secure a vital two-wicket win at Dalton and move into third place in the North Lancs and Cumbria Premier Division.

The visitors made some enforced changes and had young players to thank for a spirited performance in a nervy run chase after Dalton were bowled out for 163, Sri Lankan Warnapura top-scoring with 50.

Roo Barker and Henry Walker each picked up a couple of wickets, while professional Justin Greaves returned to the field after a bout of sickness to wrap up the innings with 5-24.

In response, Carlisle got off to a shaky start, losing openers Ben Davidson and James Lythgoe cheaply, while Greaves became one of John Bell’s four victims when he played on for three.

But man of the moment, Eddie Mitchell, stepping up from his free-scoing exploits in the 2nd XI, dug in to make 45 and together with skipper Marc Brown (53), stablised the innings.

Work, though, remained to be done once both had perished and Carlisle needed young Jonathan Davidson’s positive show of intent (23) to get close to the target which Henry Walker and keeper Andy Trickett achieved with just three balls of the 50 overs to spare.

With Haverigg conceding the Higson Cup quarter-final tie due to be played the following day, Carlisle can celebrate a successful weekend and enjoy the continued emergence of young talent.

The Premier Division’s top two teams met at Workington, and with such capable batting on both sides we had, surprisingly, a low-scoring game as both sides struggled with the bat.

Workington decided to have first knock and lost wickets regularly, and when top scorer Greg Platten went for 29, Workington were 79 for 8. The tail-enders worked hard but the home side were all out for 105 in the 44th over.

Furness’s opening bowlers, Seth Rance, 3 for 36, and Peter Lawson, 2 for 19, both bowled their 15 overs to great effect.

Furness were soon 11 for 2 wickets. Nathan Waterston, with 25, and Mark Daly, 22, improved the position and Scott Pearcey and Ryan Griffiths got into the teens, but at 91 for 7 the game was evenly balanced. However Seth Rance made an important 15 not out to see Furness home at 106 for 8 in the 35th over.

Workington’s pro Kaushalya Gajasinghe took 3 for 19 in 9 overs. This was Workington’s first Premier Division defeat since 2015.

Keswick made a good start against Cleator, with an opening stand of 54 by Andrew Bryson, 42, and Arran Davies 18. Another good stand of 78, between Geeth Kumara, 70, and Glen Weightman, 41, saw Keswick to 224 for 7 at tea. Cleator’s David Blackwell took 4 for 52 in 14 overs.

Cleator’s openers also started well, Robert Mason, 57, and Chris Quin, 22, putting on 82, and with pro Kavindu Kulasekara making an unbeaten 55, Cleator won in 48 overs with 226 for 7. Keswick pro Geeth Kumara took 4 for 41 in his 15 overs.

In a highly-contested game at Cockermouth, the home side were put in by Wigton and batted well to be 205 for 9 at tea.

In reply, Wigton came so close to the win, but were all out in the last over for 199 to lose by just six runs.

In the First Division, Haverigg were in first and found the Whitehaven attack difficult to handle.

Only Drew Postlethwaite with 66 and Robbie Evans, 26, got into double figures making three-quarters of Haverigg’s all out total of 123. Whitehaven pro Mohammad Yasin took 6 for 27 in 9.3 overs.

In reply, Whitehaven openers Dom Chambers with 39 and Stephen Holliday, 36, gave their side a good start, and they went to a comfortable win, scoring 124 for 5. Joseph Lovell taking 3 for 23 in 10.4 overs

Winning the toss and batting, Lindal Moor openers Chris Brookshaw, 33, and Alastair Grunshaw, 78, made a good start and, with 95 from Kenroy Peters, saw 258 for 8 on the board when the overs ran out. Paul McKeown took 4 for 70 in 11 overs.

In reply, Workington II had a poor day with the bat to be 92 all out in the 36th over, Craig Crawford taking 3 for 36 in his 15 overs, and Jack Cumberbatch, 3 for 21 in five overs.

Put into bat, Seascale made 262 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs, Adam Brown made 92 and J Hammond 69.

Ulverston also batted well, but were 185 all out in the 41st over. David Blain top scored with 60 with good support from Ben Dryden’s 38. Seascale’s A Mawson, 4 for 44, and Danny Lee, 4 for 50 doing the damage.

In the Second Division, Furness were put in to bat against Egremont and made 241 for 5 in their 50 overs, Elliott Maxfield top scored with 59 not out.

Egremont batted well in reply but were all out in 39 overs for 178, Dave Raynor making an excellent 89.

Cockermouth decided to bat first against Hawcoat Park and, with Andrew Dodds making 102, were all out in 50 overs for 202.

In reply, despite 66 from David Thorburn, Hawcoat Park were all out in the 32nd over for 124, Cockermouth’s Mark Cowen taking 4 for 43.

In first against Kirby, Dalton were soon two down, but Matthew Jones led a good recovery with 48, supported by Matthew Bamber, 25, and Kevin Edwards, 22.

However, the tail-enders made few runs and the visitors were all out for 113 in 36 overs. Kirkby’s Mark Etchells returned 6 for 18 in 12 overs and Brad Marshall, 3 for 47 in 15 overs.

After tea, Kirkby skipper James Thornton was soon in full flow and made 86 not out as Kirkby went to the win making 117 for 1 in 17.1 overs.

In the Third Division, there was a high-scoring game at Egremont where Lindal Moor had first knock and, mainly due to Chris Scrogham’s 139, were 236 for 7 in their 40 overs. Egremont’s Carl Jackson took 4 for 32 in six overs.

After a shaky start, Egremont made a good recovery as Lee Cruden batted well to make 85, but when overs ran out Egremont were 178 for 8, and the Moor had 10 more points. Chris Moore returned 4 for 34 in his 10 overs.

Whitehaven won the toss and decided to bat against Haverigg and made 145 for 8 in their 40 overs. Haverigg were soon in trouble and struggled to 102 for 7 in their 40 overs to give Whitehaven a comfortable win.
