Workington Comets speedway team owner set to withdraw cash support

Workington Comets owner Keith Denham is ready to pull the plug on the Derwent Park club after five years in charge.

Have your say

Regarding costs,Keith Denham has always stated that he was never in it to make money (he also isn't in it to lose money).
IF suffficient fans attended he always said he would bring the entry cost down, but he can't do that unless the stay away fans show that they will support the club. This weekend could prove that!
The vast majority of MAN UTD fans do not agree with some of the actions of their owners, but thousands still turn up every week to support the club.
Get behind the club and show what support we could have before it's to late.
Give Keith Denham the option to reduce admission the following week, lets see you all turn up Saturday

I am very sorry but the rugby club would not be running now if speedway had not returned in 1999 , i know that and the people that run Workington Town know that . Very happy to see Town doing well . Comets are doing very well .But i do think is the end of the Comets Comets fan turn 2 Now i think it will bet the end of the Rugby club thay will never get back to the teams from the 50s 60s 70s , as Sky wont be there for them ( LOOK AT BRADFORD) as Sky wont be there for Tne Comets . I do not go to see the Town but i have there Draw Tickets and had two wins But if the Comets go my ticket moneys go ,. Very Sad Time s After the Comets have gone , Iwill gine 3 years and Tseco will be at D/P ..

Les Hall - the burger vans are outside caterers from keswick and have nothing to do with workington rugby league and as for the bar it isn't a necessity to the speedway so your comment just seems a bit irrelevant the article!

I haven't been to speedway for about 2 months or more bus it just costs too much, entrance ticket+programme+50-50 ticket plus something to eat is alot of money when your unemployed, so I agree drop the addmission price.

Les Hall - If you hired a room in a hotel for a party would you expect to take home allthe bar takings, etc. It's the same thing the bar is there stocked all week not just on Saturdays.

billyboy - your comments are childish and only a fool would want to see the demise of two sporting promotions in west Cumbria.

I see it looks likely that the Comets will complete their matches. As a gesture of thanks for the fans who have attended week in and week out and those who stopped going for financial reasons make admission £10 or even better £5 and let the comets go out with a bang.

Pleased to read that Workington Speedway will run this weekend, so come on all you stay away fans get yourself down to Derwent Park, and keep Speedway in Workington next year, whether it's Mr. Denham or a new owner.

my husband and my self attend every match at workington and have done since the relaunch i remember attending a meeting in derwent park lounge when mr d took over and every question that was asked the reply was its in hand but nothing has happened we listen to the same music every week no entertainment its seems like get you and get you out has soon as they can and he wonders why the crowds are dropping off at least the late ian thomas had attractions now and again its never going to be a sport where you are going to get rich quick but to say the people of workington are tired of speedway is a load of rubbish

Having made my earlier comment i do hope people flock there on saturday and prove they want speedway because if it goes it will never come back i am sure. Heres a thought Tony Mole back and Stoney as team manager what a thought ...no disrespect to jacko by the way i think he has done a good job
