Determined Workington Town centre Jason Mossop is hoping to shake off a niggling hamstring injury and turn over his old team on Saturday.

Mossop is keen to play a part in the Championship clash at Sheffield Eagles and says old friendships will be put to one side for 80 minutes as Town go all out to get their second win of the season.

“It is always nice to play against your old team and I still have some good friends down there like Rob Worrincy who I lived with,” said Mossop.

“But I play for Workington now and all I am going there for is the victory. It would be nice to get one over on my old team, especially with the way we have been playing.”

Mossop played for Sheffield whilst in the area at university before heading back home to Cumbria.

But he is well aware of the skills in their side and the coaching methods of Mark Aston.

He added: “Mark was my coach when I was there. He took me to Sheffield when I was living down there, signing me from Workington. He has been around for years and he knows his stuff.

“Sheffield are always a good side, well coached and it will be difficult, especially when we have to travel four-and-a- half-hours on a Saturday to get there. I think it is our furthest trip apart from London.”

But first Mossop has to ensure his own fitness as he is currently receiving treatment for a problem with his right hamstring and lower back.

“It got to a point against Halifax where I lost all power and had to come off. But I rested last week and got treatment and I will have more this week,” he explained.

“I have been struggling with that but, fingers crossed, I will still be okay for Saturday.

“But I won’t be pushing it if I’m not right as I could put myself back another three or four weeks.”

Mossop says getting a win is now crucial for Town as they aim to try and close the gap at the bottom of the table.

“We have got to start winning matches because we can’t keep coming back with 40-minute performances and running teams close,” he said.

“We need that result and once we get one hopefully we can kick on and like we have done in the past.

“Against Halifax it was frustrating as that’s what we know we can do but we can’t seem to do it for 80 minutes.

“It doesn’t matter who you are up against. If you give them a 30-point lead then it is going to be tough to pull it back.

“In the second half we ran them off the park, threw the ball about and played exactly how we wanted to. But it was too much of a mountain to climb in the end.”
