The future of Workington Comets is still up in the air after British speedway bosses rejected the club's planned move to Friday night racing.

Club owner Laura Morgan and co-promoters Steve Whitehead and Tony Jackson were planning for the 2018 season with a change of race night in mind, partially because of Cleator speedway star Craig Cook's Grand Prix appearances next year but also due to long-standing concerns over the sustainability of having fixtures on Saturdays.

But the British Speedway Promoters' Association, which held its annual general meeting in Tenerife at the weekend, has turned down the application because Scunthorpe and Glasgow also wanted to move to Fridays.

The club has now been forced to reconsider its plans for next season and Morgan hopes to make a decision this week on whether to run.

She said: "That leaves us now in a position where we have got a lot of work to do.

"We have got the problem of Craig Cook, a local lad, being in the Grand Prix series which is absolutely brilliant but a lot of our supporters may stay at home to watch.

"We were already sitting here thinking we didn't want to run on Saturdays and that makes the situation harder.

"The situation we find ourselves in now is that we're going to have to sit down with the fixtures, speak to sponsors and try our best to make Saturdays work.

"Until we've done that, I am not in a position to say we're definitely running."

Morgan admitted one option could be to have Saturday as the regular race night but to hold meetings on Fridays if they would clash with Cook's GP appearances.

Despite her disappointment over the BSPA's decision, Morgan did welcome moves to introduce fixed race nights, the return of tactical substitutions and an increased team building points limit.

The Championship, which Comets would race in, is set to run on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The set race days have been agreed in a bid to cut out fixture clashes.

The team building points limit has also been increased to 42.5.

Tactical rides have been scrapped, with tactical substitutions set to be reintroduced between heats five and 14, excluding heat eight, when a team trails by six points or more.

The Championship has also gained another team, with Lakeside set to join after spending a season in the National League.

Promotion and relegation, which was brought back this year, has been shelved but play-offs for the league titles have been retained for the top four sides in each division.

If they run, Comets will be in group three of the League Cup with Glasgow, Edinburgh and Berwick and have been drawn against Newcastle in the Knockout Cup.
