After showing good form early on, a poor defensive performance saw Workington Town buckle under a relentless Featherstone onslaught, ably led by their half back pairing of Anthony Tackeray and Kyle Briggs.

Although badly beaten, Town did show some good touches late on and were inspired by the move of hooker Callum Phillips to half back.

He and his brother Brett were the standout performers for Workington.

Rovers opened the scoring early on with a flowing move down the right which ending in As Handley scoring in the corner.

Town were quick to reply when Marc Shackley and Jamie Doran combined to put Carl Forber in space.

There was still plenty to do but a delightful overhead cut-out pass sent Declan Hulme racing to the corner.

Jarrod Sammut missed the difficult conversion but Town were level and looking good after for the first 14 minutes, until Briggs and Thackeray took over.

First it was Thackeray’s show and go that broke the line to put Jamie Cording over from close range, but Fev spilled the restart though they held out on their line from the resultant set.

When the Town defence had the chance to pin them back on their line they strayed offside and conceded a penalty to help them upfield, from which Thackeray reversed the play 20 metres out for Briggs to step inside and brush off the tacklers to race over.

Town had their chance when Fev went down to 12 men as Colton Roche was sin-binned for a high tackle on Callum Phillips, but after Forber’s grubber won a goal line drop out they couldn’t capitalise and Rovers stung them with further tries from Thackeray and Channing.

Town had a chance in between when Graeme Mattinson broke clear to feed Brett s Phillips, but the inside pass to Jason Mossop went to ground.

Jamie Foster converted all four tries to send Rovers into the break 28-4 up.

Workington came out from the break with renewed vigour, but missed three early chances that could have brought them back into the game.

Sammut threatened in the left hand corner but couldn’t get his pass out to Theerapol Ritson, and soon after he snatched up a loose ball 30 metres out with men in support but picked the wrong option and Fev’s Cording gratefully accepted.

Finally he couldn’t hold onto Alex Szostack’s pass on the line after the powerful forward might have done better by going himself after a forceful break in which he hit the defensive line like a battering ram.

Featherstone stung them again by coming upfield and putting Foster over in the corner.

He missed the conversion but added the extras to Fev’s final two touchdowns.

First, Taulapa offloaded to Ian Hardman after another Thackeray dummy, then Thackeray sent Taulapapa 30 metres upfield to release Tim Spears on his inside to send Rovers forty points in front.

With the beyond them Town earned some respect with three late tries.

They moved the ball left and right until Sammut spotted Hulme in space out on the right wing.

His clever, inch perfect, flat kick was more like a pass and the flanker gratefully snatched it out of the air to race to the corner for his brace.

Five minutes later, Callum Phillips, who made a huge difference after switching to half-back, put his brother Brett through with a simple pass from where it was no contest whenever he hits the line at speed.

They also wrapped up the scoring in a bizzare piece of action in which the ball was spilled backwards by both sides before Sammut dived onto the ball and threw out a reverse pass off the floor for Shackley to storm over from 15 metres. Sammut converted all three tries to bring Workington’s scoreline up to an almost respectable 22.
