Phil Veivers warned Workington Town’s returning players would have a tough job to get their shirts back after the club’s victory at Sheffield last weekend.

Town picked up their second win of the season last Saturday and Veivers was delighted with the performance of his squad.

But now with only two players left on the treatment table, he admitted there were some tough choices to be made.

“I have said before that if the guys who have got hold of the vests are doing the job then they will keep them,” said Veivers.

“That is a decision I have to make to put a team out that can give Batley a good run.”

Brett Carter and Karl Olstrom are the only two players likely to not be in contention for Veivers’ side to take on Batley at the Zebra Claims Stadium on Sunday, ko 3pm. Carter dislocated his shoulder on Saturday and hasn’t been able to train fully.

Veivers added: “We are in a position now that if Brett is not 100 per cent fit, then we have others we can bring in. Everyone else, apart from Karl, will be up for contention. I have some tough decisions to make.”

Long-term absentee Latu Fifita has come through training with flying colours and Veivers said he would now be considered for selection.

“Latu has been training really hard and has put his hand up for selection,” said Veivers, “as has Alex Szostak, Ryan Verlinden and everyone else who didn’t play last week. They all have their hands up, desperate to get a chance to take that shirt off the next man’s back.”

And Veivers hopes his side can now build on last weekend’s victory and improved showing when Batley come to town.

“There were improvements when we played Bradford even though the score didn’t back that up,” he added.

“Then there were positive signs in the second half at Halifax. Then came a break which gave us a chance to work on our structures ahead of the Sheffield match.

“That seemed to work a treat for us. The boys were up for it and we got the result that we justly deserved.”
