One of Scottish League Two's best away records will come up against the league's best home record this season as Annan Athletic welcome Montrose today.

The two sides currently occupy the final two play-off places, heading into the penultimate weekend of the season.

But both teams have negative goal differences, while fifth-placed Elgin City, who have a goal difference of 21, are only a point outside the play-offs and two behind Annan in third. So, all is still to play for as the regular 2016/17 Scottish League Two campaign draws to a close.

And Annan manager Jim Chapman is expecting the Gable Endies, who appointed Stewart Petrie as their boss in December, to provide a stern test.

He said: “They have shown some consistency since the beginning of the year with their new manager.

“Their away form is one of the best this season. It shows what can happen when you get a consistent run of results. [But] one more home win for us would be a bonus.”

Chapman’s side were forced to undertake a major squad overhaul last summer, which makes their promotion challenge this term more remarkable.

The former Dumbarton boss added: “It’s testament to the squad.

"We had to completely rebuild the squad in the summer. It shows, when you get the right squad, anything is possible and achievable.”

And the Black and Golds boss admitted he will be looking to his more experienced players to guide his younger players through their crucial end to the season.

He said: “We always look at that. At the end of the day, our big players need to perform all the time.

“But, to me, the only pressure the players are under is to play to their maximum.”

Athletic’s form has dipped slightly this month, though, and they have only claimed the one win, losing three times.

“I always talk about the level of consistency but there are so many factors,” he said.

“We have some good players but one or two injuries and suspensions can cost us. But I don’t look for excuses.”

Darren Ramsay starts a ban after being sent off in last weekend’s 2-0 loss at Edinburgh City, and Chapman said: “We are going to miss him.”

Jordan Stewart and Max Wright will miss out, while there are further injury doubts for Annan this afternoon. Kick-off at Galabank will be at 3pm.
