Having a settled squad is what Carlisle City manager James Tose is putting his side's recent upturn in fortune down to.

Just two weeks ago, the Sky Blues had suffered seven straight defeats.

But they will now be looking to claim a third win in a row, and a fifth victory in six games, against Sandbach United this afternoon [3pm kick-off].

Tose said: "Credit has to go to the lads. Being down to the bare bones galvanised them, I think.

"It's no coincidence there has been a pattern between the amount of changes we had been making and the results we had been getting.

"The last few games we have had a settled squad of 12 or 13 and been able to work on things."

"That has made a big difference and allowed us to work on how to execute game plans and get the players used to their roles and responsibilities," he added.

"Myself and Jonny [Allan, assistant manager] have been chipping in a bit on the pitch, as well, which is nice."

Reflecting on the last fortnight, Tose said: "It's been a good few weeks all round.

"Tuesday night [against Silsden AFC] was probably the first time we have really started well.

"We didn't really hold on but we did stick together. That was good to see."

A number of young players have featured for City this campaign, while the likes of Tose, Allan and ex-Carlisle United and Barrow man Mark Boyd have plenty of experience, which has helped the youngsters settle in.

"When you bring young lads in, they need to get experience but they need a few calm heads around, as well," Tose said.

"On Tuesday night, Ben Davidson came on and did well. And Junior Green came on to help see the game out.

"We had Karl Skelton in goal last Saturday and he is only 16 years old.

"But we need to make sure we use them in the right times and in the right positions."

On today's fixture against sixth-placed Sandbach United, Tose said: "They have put a little bit of a run together at home.

"They will be tough opponents. But I'm sure we can get something from the game.

"Home form has been good to us this season. Let's hope we can keep it that way today."

The City boss also reflected on last Saturday's dramatic 4-3 win over St Helens Town, in which, manager Tose equalised before his assistant, Allan, grabbed the winner.

Tose said: "If you had written a script, you probably could not have written a better one.

"I was pleased for Jonny. He showed the lads what he is capable of.

"I'm still 2-1 up against him for goals this season, though!"
