It was a watching brief for Jarrad Branthwaite in his first experience of a full England international.

The Cumbrian defender was named among the substitutes for the Three Lions' defeat to Brazil at Wembley.

Manager Gareth Southgate went with the more experienced centre-backs of Harry Maguire and John Stones to take on Dorival Junior's side.

He did not turn to the Wigton star during the game as England fell to a 1-0 defeat thanks to 17-year-old Endrick's 80th-minute goal.

It leaves 21-year-old Branthwaite hoping for a full international debut when England take on Belgium at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

Everton's former Carlisle United defender, given squad number 15, took part in the warm-up at the national stadium with his new Three Lions colleagues before watching the game from the bench.

Southgate handed a debut to Anthony Gordon in his starting XI while Ezri Konsa and Kobbie Mainoo came off the bench for their first full England outings.

Other subs who came into the action were Jarrod Bowen, Joe Gomez and Lewis Dunk.

Ahead of the game, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford - the former Carlisle United loanee - spoke about Branthwaite's arrival on the Three Lions scene.

"He's a bit of a Rolls Royce," Pickford told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"He's calm and he makes the right decisions as well. He's been quality all season.

"It will be a massive honour for him and his family to get called-up for England and I'd say it's fully deserved.

"I'm not the manager but if you're playing well, and you're in the set-up, then the door is always open."

England's game against Belgium kicks off at 7pm on Tuesday and will be shown live on Channel 4.
