Former Carlisle United player Danny Devine has suffered a broken leg in his latest non-league outing.

The midfielder, who is now with Gainsborough Trinity, suffered the serious injury in their Northern Premier League Premier Division game against Warrington Rylands on Saturday.

Devine, 26, was stretchered off and taken to hospital after suffering the lower leg injury and the extent has now been confirmed by his club.

In an update on social media platform X, Gainsborough said: "We can confirm that midfielder Danny Devine sustained a clean break of his tibia in yesterday's victory over @RylandsFC.

"He remains in hospital & is scheduled for surgery tomorrow (Monday).

"May we take this opportunity to thank the medical staff at #Rylands for their swift actions. Our thoughts are with @daniel1_devine at this difficult time & wish him a successful operation & speedy recovery."

Gainsborough boss Russ Wilcox, speaking to his club's media channels after their 4-1 victory, said his first thoughts were with Devine.

"Our best wishes go to him," Wilcox said.

"He's been superb for us. He's shown me in the last three or four games what I knew he can do. We wish him well."

Devine was with United from 2020 to 2022, joining from Bradford City during Chris Beech's spell in charge, and made 35 appearances.

After leaving in the summer of 2022, he went on to play for Chester, Farsley Celtic and Guiseley, before joining Gainsborough last November.
