Former Carlisle United man Gethin Jones has extended his stay at League One rivals Bolton Wanderers.

The defender has signed a deal that keeps him at the club until the summer of 2025.

He is the second ex-Blues player to prolong his spell with Bolton this week after Kyle Dempsey signed a new deal.

Jones is vice-captain at Bolton and said the club have helped him greatly on and off the field.

He paid tribute to their support during his mum Karen’s fight against motor neurone disease before she passed away in February last year.

“The club has done so much for myself and my family and everyone around me and helped me so much in my football, as well,” said 27-year-old Jones, speaking on Bolton’s website.

“I have played a lot of games since I’ve been here and I just want to kick on even more and help the team and the staff and give everything back to the football club, so I will be working hard in this pre-season to get going.

“Sharon (Brittan), the manager, all the staff and all the players have been so supportive to myself and really helped me get through the difficult times.

“It kept me on board with football because I didn’t really know what to do at the time with that.

“They let me have the time off and were then ready for me to come back. I felt that time to be with my mum and my family was very important and ever since I’ve come back, I’ve said in many interviews I just want to give back to the club.”

Jones, who made 37 appearances for Carlisle in the 2019/20 season before joining Bolton that summer, is one of three ex-Blues at the Whites, Dempsey and Jack Iredale the others.

They will face Carlisle in the new League One season at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on October 7.
