Ellie Dickinson will return to Carlisle this weekend for the opening of the Carlisle Cycle Circuit in Harraby.

This Sunday, 20-year-old British Cycling star Dickinson, who began her cycling career with Carlisle’s Border City Wheelers before later moving on to Penrith’s Beacon Wheelers, will be on hand to present prizes to the winners of the races.

But, during the day, there will be an opportunity for cyclists of all ages to ride for free on the new traffic free circuit from 1-2pm.

The adult racing will then start at 2.15pm, before the youth racing gets under way at 3.45pm.

For cyclists under the age of 14 who would like to try racing, the cost will be £3 and it will cost £5 for Under-18s with the Tour of Britain currently coming through Cumbria.

Paul Musgrave, Carlisle area manager for Cumbria County Council who have funded the event alongside British Cycling, said: “There is two dimensions to this event.

“The first is the adults racing which, hopefully, will attract the next generation to get involved.

“But there will be some sideshows and amusements.

“It’s not just an event for Harraby, it’s for the whole of Carlisle.”

There will also be entertainment from bands, refreshments and face painting throughout the day, with Mayor of Carlisle Jessica Riddle opening the facility in Harraby.

Meanwhile, on Dickinson’s involvement, Musgrave added: “We are really excited about that. She is our local link to British Cycling.

“What is important to remember is that she was a kid pushing a bike in the playground when she was spotted.”

Rider on the day registration starts one hour before each event.

Under-18s without British Cycling race licences must be signed on by a parent or guardian on the day.
