Stony Holme Golf Club has been celebrating a double success after they won the Northern Scratch League and Inter-Club Strokeplay events.

Having earned promotion to the Northern Premier League, finishing 10 points clear of second-placed Appleby, the Carlisle club then went to Penrith on Saturday and took home the strokeplay title.

Scratch team captain Andrew "Rusty" Douglas said: “We played 10 games, five at home and five away.

"We won seven, drew two and lost one. I think our highest handicapper was five.

"Apart from that, they were really low.”

Captain Mark Thompson added: “We have entered it for a long, long time, but this is the first time Stony Holme has won and got promotion to the Premier League.

“The Inter-Club Strokeplay is open to every club in Cumbria.

“It’s teams of three and it’s strokeplay, which means every shot counts.

"It’s 36 holes and each teams scores are added together. It’s the first time we have entered the strokeplay competition.”

After their success in the strokeplay event, Stony Holme will now represent Cumbria in the national finals in Huddersfield on the weekend of September 22-23.

It marks a remarkable turnaround for Stony Holme who, like many other clubs in Carlisle, were hit by the 2015 floods.

“As far as the club is concerned, the thing that pleases me more than anything else is it’s our first year back after we were renovated following the floods,” said Stony Holme’s Alan McConnell.

“The flood was nearly three years ago now and we were in two portacabins until March.

"A lot has happened over the last few months, really.”
