The rolling hills and big skies of the countryside north of Carlisle are showcased to perfection from the back garden of Howard and Olive Lamb's house, especially since he installed decking to make the most of the views.

"We also get these great vistas from the conservatory, which is one of my favourite rooms," Howard said. "It's great for the fantastic views and is another addition to the house in the three and a half years Olive and I have lived here."

The couple, and their two children, moved to the detached bungalow in Cotehill when Howard inherited it from his late mother. As well as the decking and conservatory, other improvements they have carried out include new double doors at the front, a new kitchen and a new raised sandstone patio.

"While my mother was living here I really wanted to put some decking down in the back, which I’ve now done," Howard said. "It’s fantastic, one of my favourite spots but I also love the kitchen. We stripped out the existing kitchen and put in a new installation from Homeplan in Carlisle."

The Lambs' bungalow, Swallow Field, was built in the late 80s and is spacious and very well presented. The inner hallway has Karndean flooring and a useful storage cupboard and doors lead off to the accommodation.

The large lounge has a rear bay window which not only floods the room with light but sets off the stunning view. The adjacent kitchen has light-coloured wall and floor units complemented by granite work surfaces and splashbacks.

There are contemporary and stylish integral Neff appliances of dishwasher, microwave, five-ring gas stove top, electric oven and American-style fridge-freezer.

The striking flooring is from Karndean and the room has ample space for dining furniture with spotlights over. A utility room is off the kitchen. The en-suite master bedroom has built-in wardrobes while the other two bedrooms share the family bathroom.

Outside is a paved front garden and at the back steps lead from the patio to a lawn with borders and plants.

"We're moving because the kids have left home and my wife would like to live nearer to Carlisle to keep in touch with her sister," Howard said. "We’re looking forward to going back into town."
