Reiver Homes unveils luxury city apartments

Work is now complete on a selection of large luxury apartments in Carlisle which are among the most impressive in the city.

Developer Reiver Homes has created just 10 exclusive homes at Shaddon Mill where the interior of this Carlisle landmark has been restored to showcase its unique original features.

Site manager Barry Mattinson said: “The beautiful sandstone walls were covered in layers of paint, and so were the impressive steel columns.

"We’ve restored them to expose the stone and metalwork, along with some great pieces of cast metal which are still embedded in the walls. The construction work is really bringing this building back to life.”

Shaddon Mill was once the biggest cotton mill in England and its chimney, which was completed in 1836, was once the largest in the country. At more than 100m high, it dominated the city skyline, as it still does today.

The impressive interior design of the new apartments is a bold mix of the old and the new. Striking stone walls and metal features, and the distinctive curved ceilings of the original building, sit alongside high-end contemporary kitchens with elegant and industrial-style lighting and bathrooms, Camaro flooring and natural weave carpets.

The apartments are also equipped with modern technology, from luxury under-floor heating to power sockets equipped with USB ports.

Emma Martin, Reiver Homes’ sales and marketing manager, said: “We've fitted very contemporary kitchens with retro-fit loft styling, in keeping with the industrial past of this building.

“We hope it will appeal to young and middle-aged professionals. Shaddon Mill is a fully-serviced apartment complex, with a management company to look after all of the practical things around the building, so people can just move in and get on with enjoying living here.”

Barry added: “This is a fantastic old building and there are not many of these old cotton mills about any more. This renovation has brought back everything that is great about this building’s architecture – it’s capturing a piece of history.”

Launched in autumn 2016, Reiver Homes is an operating division of Story Contracting, a family-owned business which is still chaired by owner Fred Story.

The new Reiver Homes development at Shaddon Mill is the second stage of this building’s transformation into apartments. Story Homes initially created 58 homes on the upper floors of the building in a conversion which has won a host of design awards.
