From newly-weds to retirees, Christine and Arthur Robinson have always lived in East Norfolk Street.

Christine said: "We bought this house when we first married in August 1978 and we’ve never moved since. We thought we were rooted here but now we’ve seen this lovely little house we like the look of."

Their current property is a traditional red-brick house dating from around 1900 with original features remaining in the cornicing and high ceilings.

Over the years it has been comprehensively refurbished by the Robinsons who have installed a new kitchen, new bathroom, double glazing, central heating, new fireplaces and spruced up the back yard with white-washed rendering.

"There wasn’t that much to do when we first moved in," Christine recalled. "We bought it from a couple whose parents had a decorator’s shop so the wallpaper was really quite nice although some of it was classic 70s.

"The paper in the sitting room was patterned with great big brown flowers which made the room look so small but it was fashionable then. We lived with that for a while and changed it as we went on."

The mid-terraced house has a traditional layout with an entrance hall leading to the two reception rooms. The sitting room is at the front of the property and has a feature fireplace as a focal point.

The dining room is towards the back of the house and also has a feature fireplace as well as a useful understairs cupboard. The kitchen is off the dining room then there's a rear hall with the bathroom beyond.

Upstairs are two double bedrooms, both with built-in cupboards, and one single with loft access from the landing.

Christine said: "There is the opportunity to move the bathroom upstairs into the small bedroom and the loft could be converted to a bedroom in its place.

"There’s probably a massive space up there and we’ve toyed with the idea of doing it out. There’s also a 7ft drop beneath the house and people along the road have made a cellar of their space."

A nurse by profession, Christine has just retired from her position as a ward manager at Cumberland Infirmary where she spent nearly 43 years.

"Arthur also worked there in the disablement services department," she said. "He retired a couple of years ago and sadly I lost my mum Ruth English then.

"In a little corner of the sitting room is a tribute to my mum with a cabinet and some pictures so I can see that when we sit and have a meal."

As keen gardeners, Christine and her mum were responsible for replacing the former rose garden in the back yard with a paved area where she now has hanging baskets and pots. "It's south-facing and really gets the sun," she said. "There's a corner bed with shrubs, a back gate and a new shed which we will leave.

"This end of the street is a nice little community. We know everybody and everyone is friendly.

"Denton Holme is a nice place and it’s very local for the town. There’s a river walk to town and a lovely walk to Cummersdale and Dalston.

"I think this is a lovely family house in a quiet area. We’ve been very happy here. It’s spacious and airy and has a really nice atmosphere.

"Funnily enough, I met the couple we bought it from recently and they said that they really missed this house when they left."
