The end of civilisation as we know it, part 397...

British industry is on its uppers. We know this.

We don’t produce much these days – not even rain, which we’ve always been famous for.

Most of our major businesses have shut down or have been bought out by foreigners.

Hornby, Rolls Royce, Tate & Lyle, Raleigh, Cadbury’s, Corgi, HP Sauce...the list is endless.

Land Rovers are American, Minis are German and now Weetabix, that soggy, mouthfilling mush that is somehow strangely pleasant, is now Chinese-owned.

On the plus side, Felicity Loudon, whose great-grandfather George Cadbury founded the sweets brand, has sold her £30 million mansion to fund a new rival chocolate firm after her family company was sold to the American firm Kraft.

Ms Loudon led the campaign to prevent the £11.5 billion takeover and branded the new owners an “American plastic cheese company”.

Good luck to her. I’ve tasted American chocolate and it ain’t pleasant.

I don’t know what the new Chinese owners have planned for Weetabix, but I hope it doesn’t leave a sweet ‘n’ sour taste in my mouth. I may be forced to go back to my egg and soldiers for breakfast.
