WE shared the news that The Telegraph newspaper recently listed all UK cities in order from best to worst 'according to science', with Carlisle placing last.

Our readers shared their thoughts on the subject.

Roz Watson said: "Carlisle is a lovely place with so much history. Granted the shopping centre needs a major uplift but then most city shopping centres are in the same boat."

Adele Louise Carter said: "Trust me, Carlisle is an easy place to live if you don't mind adverse weather and lack of larger city facilities. And if that does happen that then brings its own set of problems, due to an influx of people. Carlisle is lacking fun things to do though."

Les Mcmurdo said: "As a 75-year-old Carlisle man born and bred, our City is a shadow of its former self. Botchergate was once a thriving shopping centre with lovely diverse businesses," while Denise Millward said: "Compared to other cities, Carlisle has much to offer. It's compact, it's close to the Lake District and the Scottish Borders, the people are friendly and it's affordable."

Tammy Whitsey agreed, saying: "Been here for nine years. Lived in a number of other cities. Carlisle is by far the best. Great people, great schools, low crime. The Lakes and the west coast are a short drive."

Bridget Passey commented: "All cities (and towns) have problems but the people of Carlisle are wonderful and friendly. I’m proud to come from Carlisle."

David Somerville said: "I’ve lived all over the UK, Cyprus, New Zealand and have visited dozens of countries. I’ve chosen to live in Carlisle rather than returning to Penrith where I grew up and have zero regrets."
