The 60-year-old retired British Gas engineer was last seen in Cumwhinton Road, around 1pm last Tuesday, walking towards London Road.

His wife Lynn, of Etterby, Carlisle, told the News & Star she has no idea where he is or why he vanished.

“He has never done anything like this before,” she said.

“It’s awful what we’re going through. We’re all in the dark. The police are doing their utmost but we don’t know what’s going on.”

Mr Atkinson is described as 5ft 10in tall, of medium build with a ruddy complexion, with short, light-brown hair.

When last seen, he was wearing blue jeans and a grey jacket with a hood.

Police say they are “increasingly concerned” for his welfare.

Officers have appealed to hotels to come forward if any guests matching his description have checked-in since Tuesday.

And they are urging anyone who may have seen him to call them on 101.

Should the law banning fox hunting be repealed?

No. It's cruel, unnecessary and should be strengthened

Yes. The law is frequently broken anyway. It's unenforceable

Why waste the time when there's so many more important things to address?
