Whitehaven sports stadium: Partners look at alternative schemes

Plans for a new £5.5 million community sports stadium in Whitehaven are being re-examined.

How the proposed stadium might look

It is believed the scheme's partners are looking at potential alternatives to the stadium plan, which has faced delays over problems securing access to the Pow Beck site.

The new stadium site was due to include Whitehaven Amateurs FC’s County Ground, with the neighbouring Recreation Ground, which has hosted Whitehaven RL club since its launch in 1948, used for training and parking.

And while all concerned are tight-lipped about the latest developments, it is understood the rugby league and football clubs are working together on the best way forward.

No decisions have been taken but one idea is to redevelop the Recre with a separate new facility for Amateurs, who had their own plans for a development before the Pow Beck stadium plans surfaced.

For any proposal to get the go-ahead it must be community-orientated.

Whitehaven lost the chance to host two games in next year’s RL World Cup over concerns the new stadium would not be completed in time.

And news there is now a question mark over it will please some vocal Haven fans who have opposed the development all along, claiming cash could be better spent on improvements to the Recre.

  • Kells A forward Martin Thompson has had his two-year ban for punching a fan he claimed had verbally abused him during a cup final against Flimby halved on appeal to BARLA.

Have your say

Rugby league is dying round here. Most of the people I know who like it are older men, most men under 40 I talk to prefer football. I was talking to an ex amateur player a few months ago and he said when he played in the 80s, his team had an A, B and C team, now they struggle to make up one team.

Orange Peel: With this lot in power having ones tongue in cheek keeps away the suicide bid. I don't suppose it hits the thick skinned target though since they live in a world of the kings new clothes with an electorate unable to show them reality.
