A man who was wanted by police in connection with an alleged sexual assault, was found hanged near the River Ehen, an inquest heard.

Albert Andrew Stables Mennie, 48, of Briscoe Mount, Egremont, was found on the river bank, near East Road, in November last year.

West Cumbria coroner David Roberts ruled that Mr Mennie “took his own life”.

A post mortem concluded that Mr Mennie died as a result of asphyxia due to hanging.

Mr Roberts heard that Mr Mennie had been reported missing and was being sought by the police in relation to an allegation of sexual assault.

The inquest heard Mr Mennie had a history of recurrent depressive disorder for which he was being treated.

Patricia Mennie, who had been separated from her husband for two years, described him as “hardworking, dependable” and “ a great father”.

In conclusion, Mr Roberts said: “I’m satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt that he had a clear intention of what he was going to do.

“An allegation was made regarding Mr Mennie and he would have been aware that the police had been informed.”
