Warning over impact of Cumbrian school strike

A union leader has warned schools across Cumbria to brace themselves for the impact of a walkout by teachers tomorrow.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT), which has 3,000 members in Cumbria, is taking action nationally in the strike provoked by a dispute between the Government and the NUT.

Alan Rutter, chairman of the Cumbria branch, said: “I can’t give precise figures but every day I am getting quite a lot of details from members about those taking part”

However, the full impact of the action will not be known until Wednesday morning.

Earlier this month the Government published results of its long-awaited 2013 Teachers’ Workload Diary Survey, which surveyed 1,000 teachers and found on average teachers report working more than 50 hours per week – 12 hours more than what might be regarded as a normal working week – with headteachers clocking up more than 60.

Heads spend around half of this time on school and staffing management while classroom teachers spend at least three-quarters of the extra on planning, preparation and assessment.

The following schools will be affected by the strike action:

  • All Saints', Cockermouth: partial closure in years 1, 3, 4 and 6. The rest of the school will be open as usual.
  • Arnside National CoE
  • Barrow Island primary, Barrow
  • Beaconside Church of England primary, Penrith
  • Bram Longstaffe nursery, Barrow (open for already booked ongoing childcare hours)
  • Bridekirk Dovenby CofE primary: partial closure: open to year 6
  • Caldew School, Dalston: closed for years 7, 8, 9 and 10 pupils. Year 11, 12 and 13 pupils should be in school as normal
  • Cartmel CE primary
  • Chapel Street Infants & Nursery School, Dalton
  • Cockermouth School: partial closure
  • Crosscrake CofE Primary, Kendal
  • Dean Gibson, Kendal
  • Derwent Vale School and Nursery, Great Clifton
  • Dowdales School, Dalton: partial closure: open only for Year 11 pupils for lessons and revision sessions
  • Ewanrigg junior, Maryport
  • Flimby primary: open to year 6 only

  • Walney School: partial closure: open for Year 10 and 11 pupils; Year 9 pupils and their parents can attend the school’s Innovation Centre to discuss GCSE choices
  • West Lakes Academy, Egremont: partial closure
  • William Howard, Brampton: partial closure
