Warning for councillor who floated Harrington 'go it alone' idea

Calls for part of Workington to seize breakaway powers have promoted a furious backlash from Labour.

Have your say

I think we should be asking Mr Bracken and Mr Stoddart what they are doing for their own wards before they start dabbling in Harrington? Neither of them live in Harrington, or High Harrington so what does it matter to them? We residents of Harrington do not need their interference. If they have nothing better to do with their time in their own wards then maybe they should just resign from the Council and stop trying to spend our Council Tax on their publicity stunts. Anyone who supports this ludicrous idea should ask Mr Bracken about the 'Save Our Cloffocks'referendum that he and others called for a few years ago. What purpose did that serve? wasn't that a total waste of public money? Finally, do we residents of Harrington and High Harrington really want to increase our Council Tax Bills to create yet another tier of Local Government?
Perhaps we should be putting pressure on the Councillors we already have to make sure Harrington and High Harrington is getting its fair share of the services provided by the County Council, Allerdale Borough Council and Workington Town Council.

@Kevin - when we find out about the lavish banquets, perhaps we can get ourselves an invite, a ticket or blag our way in and have a good night out there?

I'm up for that mate.

Can I just point out that a parish council in harrington is not just for councillors to decide the people of Harrington and High Harrington would get a say on the subject. As we would be the people who it would effect. And we would get to decide by voting who we wanted representing us on the parish council.

Workington Resident: You seem to miss the point...

If the Labour group are 'in control of the council' then they have nothing to worry about have they?

My objection is that they want to stifle free speech just because they don't agree with it.

Local councils should not be dictated to by party politics which have zero relevance for local affiars

i'd like to know more about these laviah banquets every month; much more......

Seems like a lot of dramatic over reaction to an innocuous use of freedom of speech which simply floated the idea of giving the residents of Harrington a say. A town councillor approached by town residents to raise it, some of the parochial reaction gives me to wonder if Mr Stoddart is right.

Mr Lawson is bothered about the £15,000 cost of a referendum. That cost is for a ballot for the whole of Workington, one for Harringtin won't cost anything like.

Why not start with a lower cost 'consultation' to ascertain the requirement for a referendum?

Yes, she is. Point being?

The Conservative Group on the Town Council is also meant to be against this too.

Its not going to happen, lets be honest.

The Town Council meets on Wednesday, I'm going to see if he brings it up. Are you?

@Workington resident - is that 'independent' Hilary Harrington the sister of the vociferous Labour men, Gerald and Ivor Humes?

Posted by Another Harrington resident on 13 August 2012 at 15:30

Ashley, the Labour Group are in control of the council.

Members of the council are entitled to have their say. Its not just Labour who appose this, Independent Hillary Harrington also apposes it.
