Council leaders have condemned the actions of the vandals at the gardens in Eden Bridges, in Carlisle, formerly known as the Chinese Gardens.

The park, which had a £100,000 renovation in 2009, has been defaced with graffiti over buildings and walls.

Symbols include the Nazi swastika, anarchy logos, rude drawings and people’s names.

Carlisle City Council which runs the park – part of Rickerby Park – confirmed the vandalism had been reported to police and an investigation is under way.

Phil Gray, the council’s green spaces manager, said they were “disappointed” that people had “seen fit to do such a thing”.

The vandalism has happened just before a clear-up in nearby Stanwix at the weekend, with a mass litter-pick and patrols.

Paul Nedved, a city councillor for Stanwix who organised the clear-up, described the vandalism as “mind-blowing”.

“It’s sickening but we are trying to get it resolved and removed,” he said. “Thankfully, it shows the vigilance of the Friends of Rickerby Park. We will have to be increasingly vigilant in the future.”

Fellow Stanwix councillor Jacquelyne Geddes was very disappointed.

“We work so hard to try and make the environment better for the people of Stanwix and this is what you’re up against,” she added.

“It’s only a very small minority who does it. There are a lot of good volunteers in the area who put in a lot of hard work.

“It’s unbelievable how a minority can do so much costly damage. Hopefully the police will be able to identify who’s responsible.”

Council workers are trying to remove the graffiti before the weekend clean-up, a spokesman said.

The park underwent a renovation in 2009 which included repairs to pergolas and lily ponds, planting bulbs and putting down turf as well as cutting back the rock garden and removing surrounding trees to allow more light in.

This weekend will see an army of volunteers begin a large clean-up operation aimed at improving the environment and general cleanliness of the streets of Stanwix.

Have your say

Do people walk around with their eyes closed, for years the YOUTH of this city and students from the local schools, colleges and uni constantly abuse this facility with drinking parties specailly in the summer months. The foul language dubbed in the pathways and not just in Rickerby or Bits park but try every park in the city. Come on the council catch them and make them pay, it should be easy as they are at it every weekend.

65 years ago Carlisle Grammar School pupils competed on "The Run" from Strand Rd. to The Italian Gardens. Those excused, for medical reasons, from games ,e.g. Rugby, had to do "The Walk" to the Italian Gardens.
"ITALIAN GARDENS" is the correct title

Is The Autumn Statement good news for Cumbria?

Yes - the enterprise zone jobs and airport flights are a fantastic boost

It's more positive than expected but could have been better

I agree with Jamie Reed, it is all smoke and mirrors
