The crash scene

The first crash, which involved two lorries, happened shortly after 4am between junction 42 for Carlisle south and junction 43 for Carlisle.

One lane was closed while emergency services were at the scene. Debris, including yoghurts, from one of the vehicles had spilt onto the road but there were no reports of any injuries.

Then, at around 6.45am a single vehicle was involved in a separate crash on the same stretch of the motorway.

The incident forced the closure of a second lane causing lengthy delays ahead of the morning rush hour. Speed restrictions were in place.

Police had no further details about the incident.
