Strange object spotted in sky over Cumbria

These strange lights changing colour while suspended in the atmosphere were spotted in the skies above Cumbria.

Richard Smith, who took pictures of them, is hoping News & Star readers may be able to help him shed some light on the mystery.

Richard spotted the bright lights in the sky above his home in Keswick around a fortnight ago when he was getting ready for work at 5.30am.

At first he thought it might have been an aeroplane or helicopter, but the longer he watched it the more he realised the object was like nothing he had ever seen before. The 24-year-old quickly turned to his telescope and managed to spot the lights hovering, but not moving, and regularly changing colour, pulsating with light.

Richard, of Derwent Hill, then grabbed his iPhone and began filming the phenomena through his telescope.

He said: “I had never seen anything like it before – it was some sort of sphere with lights around the outside.

“I thought it might have been a satellite but it was constantly changing colour and pulsating, which satellites don’t do.

“I’m not sure how far away it was – it looked like it was in the stars, and it was pretty high.”

Several possible explanations have been put forward on a UFO website where Richard has posted the video of his unexplained sighting – but none seem to add up.

Richard rejected one person’s suggestion that it could be a kite lit with LED lights as the object he saw was stationary the whole time.

Pat Regan, a UFO expert and author based in Cockermouth, believes that if Richard’s video is a fake, it’s well done.

He said: “This unidentified object appeared to be reflecting or emitting light. It may also be revolving.

“It is rather difficult to say more at this stage because we cannot ascertain the actual size of the entity, for there is no other object in the video to base its dimensions upon such as a tree, a building or the moon, etc.

Have your say

Me and 3 freinds went camping at Mungrisdale 4 years ago seen something similar hovering then going up and down then moving along and going up and down with lights changing yellow green and red. It lasted afew minutes then flew off very fast, faster than any plane iv ever seen. There was no noise at all which was strange! !
The next morning we walked up to were it was to see if there was any masts, lights or marks where something had landed, there was nothing.
All 4 of us seen it and cant think of an explenation of what it could be! Wasnt a plesant night camping after that!

@starman, no I asked for real evidence of a crashed UFO on Caldbeck in the 50's not some conspiracy theory.

Seriously, if aliens have the technology to travel huge distances to earth do you really think they need have fancy twinkling lights on the outside of their spaceship to advertise their presence? When I see *real* evidence of alien visitors then I'll believe it, and by real I don't mean blurry photographs which could quite frankly be of anything at all, nor do I mean unsubstantiated rumours and conspiracy theories.
