'Shocking' number of drink drive arrests in Cumbria

A Christmas drink drive campaign has seen 11 people arrested in west Cumbria in less than 35 hours.

Police have described the figure as “shocking”.

Between 1am yesterday and midday today, officers arrested 11 motorists for either driving while above the legal alcohol limit or being unfit to drive due to drugs.

A West Roads Policing Unit spokesman said: “Police would like to remind members of the public that the effect of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs can be devastating and will not be tolerated in Cumbria.

“Eleven arrests in 35 hours for drink driving is shocking and is putting lives at risk.”

The force has vowed to continue to clampdown on motorists who drive while under the influence, saying they will be conducting regular spot checks on roads across west Cumbria.

He added: “We would urge people to remind friends and family of the dangers and report anyone they know to be drink driving to the police.”

Anyone with concerns about a drink driver can call the force on 101.
